Background
Chirundu is one of six Local Boards that comprise Zimbabwe's 32 Urban councils. It was formed by Presidential Proclamation in 1983, which split it from Hurungwe Rural District Council. It is 355 kilometres north-west of Harare, along the mighty Zambezi River. It has three wards and four councillors as a result of the 2022 delimitation. Most sub-provincial central government institutions that promote Chirundu's growth are based in Karoi, which is around 150 km away and serves as a gateway to SADC countries.
Population of Chirundu is 1911 as per 2022 census. Chirundu's population ranges from 20 to 45 years old, with very few elderly individuals, children under the age of 18, and people with disabilities. With only one primary school and one secondary school, Chirundu Local Board is underserved in terms of basic facilities and services. The majority of Chirundu's population works in clearing and transportation services, safaris, and with the majority of women working in vending. Chirundu's formal employment is primarily in the public sector, which includes the Department of Immigration, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA), Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Local Council, Public Works Department, National Parks, Vehicle Inspection Department, EMA, Veterinary Department, AGRITEX, FORESTRY COMMISSION, MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, COMESA, Health and Defence.
